Nintendo Switch Sports in the test: Like a class reunion, just different
Thanks to Nintendo Switch Sports, frequent sporting activities are back on the daily schedule. But something is still missing.
- What's new? What is known?
- badminton, volleyball and football
- Chanbara and tennis
- and of course bowling
- Movement control is not out!
In 2006 Wii Sports fell like a bomb. Everyone wanted to have it and play and the Wii was sold out for months. The best thing was: the title was directly included in many countries on the console. It is therefore not surprising that Wii Sports is one of the most successful games of all time with over 80 million units sold. The successor Wii Sports Resort with improved movement control also sold enormously well, but afterwards the wave of success was noticeable. Wii Sports Club, which was published for the Wii U in 2013, could no longer build on the sales of its predecessors. Excessive movement control was no longer as much as a few years earlier. The fact that the market for such games still offers a lot of potential has recently proven ring fit Adventure. Nintendo Switch Sports has recently been published and continues the tradition of Wii Sports. But is that still enough today?
What's new? What is known?
Nintendo Switch Sports is structured similarly to the original. After creating your own character, it can start immediately. But you can also play a predefined athlete. If you have made your choice, you are right in the middle of it. An introduction? There is not any! It goes directly to the choice of the six existing sports. With tennis, Chanbara (sword fight) and bowling, the game offers well -known food from the predecessors. Badminton, volleyball and football are completely new. In keeping with the latter, the physical version of Nintendo Switch Sports still includes a leg belt in which you can use a Joy-Con. However, it still has no purpose, which will only change with an update in summer when a suitable mode appears. Incidentally, with Golf, a seventh sport follows with a free patch.
Anyone who has played one of the predecessors knows that the focus is on movement control in Nintendo Switch Sports activities. Lay around somewhere on the couch and press a button listlessly is not. The movements of the actual sport are imitated using one or both Joy-Cons. Even with the character, you don't have to run with a few exceptions, but more on that later. However, if you are not yet familiar with movement control, you have to approach yourself first. Tips are always displayed during loading times, but a tutorial is only available for sword fighting, football and volleyball. You have to find out about the bowling, tennis and badminton yourself.
badminton, volleyball and football
Since we played both Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort up and down, we first plunged on the three new disciplines. "Does badminton really differ from tennis?" Was one of our first questions. In advance: Yes, it does and that is related to the slightly different movement. While tennis tends to determine the action with a Joy-Con, the badminton is smaller and faster. The feeling of standing in a badminton hall actually arises in which the squeaking of sneakers can be heard. Volleyball also works amazingly well. Prites, blocks, excavators and smashing corresponds almost exactly to the real model. Only that you only need a Joy-Con and thus play one hand, scratches the illusion. For this you can change the position of your character with the stick.
That brings us to football. Classic as in FIFA and EFOOTBALL, you control your character in a game 4-against-4 or 1-to-1 with the stick. All other actions carry out movements. For a shot, you swing a Joy-Con and both for a flight header at the same time. For us it didn't feel like we are playing football, but our games were still fun. However, the combination of classic control and movement will not promise every1. Due to the constellation that there are a maximum of four players in a team, we immediately remembered our childhood on the football field, where the teams were hardly bigger and the back field player also had to defend the goal. And on the offensive there was just: always firm druff!
Chanbara and tennis
The three well -known sports sword fight, bowling and tennis feel almost identical to a few small differences like the originals from Wii Sports or Wii Sports Resort. Tennis in particular captures the flair of a real match pretty well, even if we don't have to run around in our room. Praise, butterfly ball or even a ball long -lasting past the opponent past the baseline is not a problem with a bit of practice. Chanbara also works perfectly. Above all, we didn't remember it so tactically. Wild rums only lead to success in exceptional cases, because the movements, i.e. how we hold and swing the swing, are recognized flawlessly in 99 percent of cases. This results in an interesting interplay, especially for duels among experienced players. Who twitches first? Who correctly calculated the cover? This is pure nerve poker.
and of course bowling
Do we have to say a word about bowling? It will probably be one of the most popular sports again. Almost everyone understands the rules, the movement control is child's play and, especially with friends, hours like in a flash, as long as no Joy-Con flies unintentionally through the area.
You can play all sports in various difficulty levels, locally with a maximum of three friends and online with, depending on the rules and sport, up to 16 players. So you can enjoy a bowling evening when no friends have time to come by.
Movement control is not out!
It is really amazing how much fun movement control is still doing today. Sure, not all movements are not always recognized perfectly, but Nintendo Switch Sports is also not an eSports title that matters nuances. The fun is clearly in the foreground and Nintendo did it excellently. The new sports do a lot of fun and everyone will quickly find their personal favorites. However, Nintendo left a lot of potential elsewhere. There are no statistics or something in the way. Questions about the number of victories and defeats therefore do not arise.
Not even in the app, where we can look at our "Splatoon 2" statistics, for example. The only way to show others how much you have already played are activable accessories for the character and this can only be done in the online game. Too bad, because there are no local ranking lists with friends or something comparable. If you have played a sport online at least ten times, you may just ascend on a worldwide ranking to play against better opponents. If necessary, you can also pause at any time and play online again without pressure. However, said ranking is not exactly equipped with a lot of information.
Conclusion
Nintendo Switch Sports feels like the first class reunion after ten years. Some things have changed, a lot has remained the same and you miss a few things. Nintendo masterfully delivered the obligation, but fails in the freestyle. We strongly doubt whether freely playable clothes, sports equipment and accessories as well as a simple ranking list for long -term motivation. In addition, more setting options for the individual sports would have been desirable. Nintendo Switch Sports is a real fun grenade, especially in multiplayer mode. The title also makes you in a mood, but only when you spend yourself online or in front of the couch will really be happy. It's just a shame that you can't see what you have already achieved. There is only a high score option for the mini-game in the credits. Sure, that was definitely needed!
